How do you feel about coincidence? Do you think they exist? If so, what are they about?

Do you believe in signs from The Divine or from our loved ones on The Other Side? If so, what has convinced you that these signs are real?

My son Mike died of suicide on December 17, 2010. Although he died on the 17th, we didn’t learn of this until 4 am on the 18th. This timeline matters.

On December 17th I was in my office. The first part of the day was spent listening to a gentleman who was deeply concerned about his son. He had spoken of hurting himself, possibly even suicide. As you can well imagine, it was a deeply emotional, meaningful conversation.

A bit later a friend came to the office. She had lost 2 people dear to her heart in the weeks leading up to this date, both to suicide. She simply needed a place to talk, a safe place to be heard. I’m grateful that I was able to offer both. As I mentioned, this woman had become a friend and since Christmas was only a week away, she brought in a small gift for me. When I opened it, I was deeply touched as the quote resonated with my heart.

Beautiful and deeply meaningful.

In the wee hours of the next morning, I learned of my son’s death. Mike was only 23 years old.

As I reflect on that day, now 9 years later, I am really rather astounded. Had folks come to talk to me about concerns or results of losing those they cared about? Yes. The difference is that for both of these people, it was specifically suicide that was the topic. Coincidence? Or was it possible that these were signs that I simply had no way of recognizing at the moment?

The mug that my friend gifted to me has become very precious. Yes, because it was a gift from a dear friend and one of my most stalwart supporters as I grieved my son. But also because each and every time I use it, or even see it, it reminds me that while Mike’s life was short, much shorter than I would ever have imagined, it was rich. He laughed with great abandon, he loved with his entire being and he knew that he was loved in return.

And so I ask you once again, how do you feel about the idea of coincidence? Do you think they exist? If so, what are they about?

As for me, I imagine you already know. Yes, I believe these were signs and as I look back, they are deeply meaningful to me and I am grateful.
